The Best Books for Executive Assistants (Actually Recommended by EAs)

Ask a bunch of executive assistants for their favorite productivity book and you'll probably get a bunch of different answers. So...we did.

We asked our community of executive assistants to recommend the books they keep on their desks and return to when they need fresh ideas. The result? Over 30 EAs shared their reading list full of leadership advice, productivity hacks, communication tips and career wisdom – recommended by the people who actually do the job every day. 

After all, EAs do so many things – they are essentially professional problem-solvers. If someone's calendar is in chaos, they'll fix it. If a meeting room disappears, they'll find another. They anticipate problems, mediate conflict and protect confidential information…all before lunch. 

The downside? Many EAs become so good at looking after everyone else that they forget to make time for themselves. It's one of the reasons books about boundaries, confidence and managing priorities hit home within the EA community.

What Makes a Great EA Book?

Interestingly, very few of the recommendations were actually about diary management or inbox zero. Here’s what EAs overwhelmingly recommended books about:

One thing became obvious from these recommendations: The best executive assistants are incredibly curious. From learning how to have difficult conversations and becoming more productive to building stronger relationships with leaders, reading is one of the hands-down easiest ways to invest in your career.

1. The Leader Assistant by Jeremy Burrows

With twice as many recommendations as any other book on the list, The Leader Assistant was the clear favorite.

4. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

A workplace classic for good reason. Covey's timeless habits focus on prioritization and long-term thinking – skills that sit at the heart of every great executive assistant role.

5. Beautiful Leader by Dawn Stallwood

Leadership doesn't have to be loud to be effective, despite what Hollywood would have you believe. This book encourages readers to lead with authenticity, empathy and confidence, making it especially relevant for EAs who influence behind the scenes.

6. Bet on Yourself by Ann Hiatt

It’s all in the title, really. Former Google and Amazon executive Ann Hiatt shares her secrets to building confidence, embracing opportunities and thinking bigger about your career.

7. Crucial Conversations by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan & Al Switzler

Voted: Best Conflict Resolution Guide

Every EA eventually has to navigate difficult conversations – no matter how diplomatic you are, it’s inevitably one of the more stressful aspects of the job. This bestselling guide teaches practical techniques for communicating clearly, handling conflict and staying calm under pressure – even when the stakes are high…and the blood pressure.

8. Difficult Conversations by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton & Sheila Heen

9. Essentialism by Greg McKeown

When everything feels urgent, Essentialism asks one question: What actually matters? It's an excellent guide to prioritizing the work that has the biggest impact – a daily challenge for many executive assistants.  

10. The Evolved Assistant by Tara Sims

Written specifically for executive assistants, this book explores how the profession has evolved into a strategic leadership role. Expect practical advice on communication and how to influence your partnerships with executives.

11. First Things First by Stephen Covey

Another Covey classic, this book dives deeper into managing priorities rather than just managing time. A helpful reminder that being busy isn't always the same as being effective.

12. Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman

Voted: Most Thought-Provoking Read

A refreshing take on productivity that challenges the idea of trying to do everything. And if you’re ready to have your mind blown – take a moment to unpack the name of the book. The titular four thousand weeks refers to the average human lifespan: Let’s say you live to around 80 years old, you have roughly 4,160 weeks. Yep. Let that sink in.

80 years sounds like a long time, right? But when you hear 4,000 weeks, it suddenly feels...not so long. 

At first glance, you probably think this sounds like just another productivity book. It's actually almost the opposite. Burkeman argues that modern productivity culture has convinced us we can eventually get everything sorted, when really…we can't. There will always be another email, another meeting, another project, another hurdle on that never-ending to-do list. 

But he’s not saying panic, rather, instead of trying to squeeze more into your life, he encourages you to accept that your time is finite, and because it's finite, you should choose carefully what deserves it. It's less about doing more and more about doing what matters most.

13. How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis

Although written about home life, many EAs recommended this book for its compassionate approach to perfectionism and self-care. Davis offers a gentle reminder that productivity starts with looking after yourself too and remembering to “Put your own oxygen mask on first.” 

It’s not selfish. It’s survival. 

14. How to Work with Complicated People by Ryan Leak

Let's be honest – we've all worked with a Michael Scott or an Angela Martin. This practical guide explores healthier ways to communicate, build understanding and navigate difficult personalities without losing your cool or chewing through your PTO before January’s done. 

15. Managing Up by Melody Wilding

One of the most valuable skills an EA can develop is managing upwards. It isn't about managing your boss – it's about building a partnership that helps both of you succeed. Wilding unpacks exactly how to get the balance just right, sharing strategies for building stronger relationships with leaders and communicating expectations respectfully. 

16. Reignite Your Professional Passion by Chrissy Scivicque

Relating a little too much? You’re not alone, and it’s completely valid. 28. The World's Worst Assistant by Sona Movsesian

Need a laugh? Conan O'Brien's longtime assistant shares hilarious behind-the-scenes stories from her career working with the beloved late night host. Equal parts memoir and comedy, it's proof that even the best – and the most famous – assistants have chaotic moments.

One of our EA community members cut to the heart of this book, sharing two simple words: “It’s funny.” 

Yep, sometimes you need a good laugh to get through the day. 

29. Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson

An absolute classic business fable about adapting to change, the message of Who Moved My Cheese? remains just as relevant today: The people who embrace change are often the ones who thrive. “Let go or be dragged” is the Zen proverb that sums it up pretty perfectly, and all the more so for EAs. 

For most people, change is an occasional challenge, but for executive assistants, it's Tuesday morning. Today's priority becomes tomorrow's cancellation, the 2pm meeting suddenly becomes a 10am meeting and someone always needs just one “little” favor. 

Who Moved My Cheese? is an insightful – and yes, you can probably tell from the title, humorous – reminder that resisting change usually creates more stress than the change itself. 

It's the kind of book that sticks with you long after you've finished reading.

30. Who Took My Pen...Again? by Joan Burge

Sometimes it’s the little things that drive an EA mad. Written specifically for administrative professionals, this hilarious book shares surprisingly weighty tips and relatable workplace stories that many EAs will recognize instantly.

31. Timeboxing by Marc Zao-Sanders

Why So Many EAs See Themselves in These Books

Executive assistants spend their days making other people's lives easier – they're the ones solving problems before anyone else notices them, remembering birthdays, playing priority Olympics and keeping the day-to-day essentials moving behind the scenes. It's no surprise that many EAs naturally lean towards putting other people first.

As we pointed out earlier, it’s no surprise that EAs often show the Big Five agreeableness trait, with research consistently linking this type with supportive workplace behaviours and stronger interpersonal relationships. Those qualities make exceptional executive assistants, but they can also make it harder to say "no", protect your own time or invest in your own career development.
