Schools run on more than lesson plans and homework – behind the scenes, there’s an army of volunteers organizing everything from the end-of-term BBQ to planning birthday celebrations and fundraisers. Yes – we’re talking about the PTA.
Parent Teacher Associations are the heartbeat of our school communities, helping teachers and students feel supported, along with bringing families together. But here’s the sad part: the people doing the appreciating rarely get appreciated themselves. That’s where a little planning can make a big difference – throughout the school year, there are several key moments designed to recognize the teachers, staff and volunteers who keep schools running.
If you’re part of a PTA or school community, here are the key appreciation dates worth putting on your calendar.
When: First full week of May – May 4 to May 8, 2026
This is the big one – Teacher Appreciation Week is your best chance to thank the major contributors to school life as we know it. It’s a nationwide celebration of the educators who inspire and guide students – and occasionally confiscate phones during class. It’s easy to celebrate with:
For PTAs, this week is often the centerpiece event of the year – the Christmas of the appreciation calendar, if you will! Planning usually starts weeks (sometimes months) in advance, often fraught with stress and chaos.
Our hack: With a gift organizing platform like GroupTogether, you can schedule your group card and gift ahead of time and relax as the day rolls around, knowing we’ve got it covered.
When: Tuesday of Teacher Appreciation Week – Tuesday May 5, 2026
While the entire week celebrates educators, National Teacher Day is the headline moment – so if you’re picking a day for the party, this would be it. Many schools plan their biggest gestures here, from appreciation assemblies to surprise treats for teachers and staff.
While official appreciation days are important, some of the most memorable school moments happen around the big holidays on the calendar.
These celebrations often bring the school community together and give PTAs a natural opportunity to show appreciation to teachers and staff in fun, creative ways – the beauty of these seasonal celebrations is that they’re already on the school calendar. That makes celebrating that much easier – whether you’re organizing a staff breakfast, collecting messages from students or arranging a small group gift, the whole school will be ready for fun. You’ve also got the added bonus of letting educators know you see their work – all year long, not just on the standard appreciation days.
Let’s take a look at some of the major events – but by all means, add as many more as you like to your calendar. (Trust us – you can’t have too much appreciation!)
Valentine’s Day
When: February 14
Valentine’s Day isn’t just for heart-shaped chocolates and secret admirer card exchanges. Many PTAs use the occasion to share a little love with teachers and staff – whether it’s giving out brownies, a coffee cart or a thoughtful group card from the class.
Halloween
When: October 31
Halloween events are often PTA-powered, from trick-or-treats between classrooms to school festivals. It’s also a fun chance to surprise teachers with themed snacks, treat bags or student-made art to hang up in the staff room – but often the most moving gift is a group card from the class (and it doesn’t hurt that it’s the easiest, most affordable gift too!).
Thanksgiving
When: November 26, 2026
Thanksgiving is a natural moment to pause and reflect on gratitude – it’s literally in the name. Some PTAs organize staff appreciation lunches or even gratitude walls where students write Thank You notes, or small gifts like a $5 or $10 AnyCard to recognize the people who support the school community every day.
Christmas and other Religious Holiday Celebrations
When: December 25
The end of the year is one of the most popular times for appreciation – whether you're celebrating Christmas, Hannukah, Yule or another end-of-year celebration. As the semester wraps up, many families want to say thank you to the teachers and staff who have supported their children throughout the year.
Class gifts, group cards and staff celebrations are common ways PTAs help make the holidays feel special.

When: May 1, 2026
Principals are the ultimate school multitaskers – they’re leaders, problem solvers and community builders all in one. Principals’ Day is an opportunity for PTAs and school communities to recognize the leadership that keeps schools running smoothly. Not sure what to do? Try any of the following:
When: Third week of April
PTAs rely heavily on volunteers – parents who give their time to organize events, support teachers and strengthen the school community. National Volunteer Week is your chance to say thank you to the people who set everything up, stay late and somehow always end up waking up at the crack of dawn for the morning bake sale. Thoughtful, small eGift Cards like Starbucks vouchers that allow them to pick up their favorite order (and stay caffeinated!) are perfect for showing your appreciation – keep it small, acknowledgement is key here.
You may find you have a lot of volunteers you want to send a little love to – that’s why GroupTogether offers bulk eGift Cards, so you can get everything sorted in a matter of minutes, schedule the delivery date and relax while we take care of the rest.
Recognition might seem like a small gesture, but it carries real weight – educators consistently report that feeling appreciated by their school community is one of the most meaningful forms of support they receive. Take that away and you can see why teachers and principals are leaving the profession in droves – overtime, stress and a lack of appreciation are the key drivers of school fatigue.
But appreciation doesn’t need to mean a massive festival with national choirs called in and expensive catering – as you can see above, just sending a group card from the class or a small eGift Card for them to treat themselves is the key to reminding them why they signed up in the first place.
And – remember not to forget yourselves! PTA volunteers are vital to the school community and are so often the ones doing the thanking while, ironically, missing out on that appreciation. That’s where Volunteer Week offers the chance to spotlight everyone who goes above and beyond for their school. And if you’re the one who always does the organizing and have found yourself missing out on the appreciation, again, send this article to your fellow team members and hand over the reins!
Bonus points for emotional impact: When appreciation comes from students, parents and the broader school community, it reinforces something powerful: that the work happening in – and outside – the classroom matters.
In theory, appreciation celebrations should be easy with parent, student and teacher support – but the reality is a little different. Collecting contributions, organizing group gifts, coordinating messages – it can quickly become a lot for one PTA volunteer to manage. That’s why GroupTogether was created – instead of chasing payments or shopping around for the perfect gift, everyone can sign the card online, leave a message and contribute to a flexible group gift like the AnyCard so the recipient can choose from 150+ retailers.

Don’t forget that the most moving part of any gift is the card! That’s where all the warm and fuzzies lie. With GroupTogether, creating a digital group card from the whole class is unreasonably easy:
It turns a logistical headache into, well, fun! That means you’re left with more time for the important part: celebrating educators.
Schools thrive when communities show up for them, teachers feel supported, volunteers stay engaged and – maybe most importantly – students see firsthand the value of gratitude and teamwork. So whether it’s Teacher Appreciation Week, Volunteer Week or just a random Tuesday when a hardworking volunteer deserves a thank you, a small gesture can have a big impact. After all, while it helps to mark down the key dates on the calendar, appreciation isn’t just about one event – it’s about building a culture where the people shaping the next generation feel seen and supported.
