How to Celebrate Boss's Day at Work (2026): Cards, Gifts & Team Ideas

A great boss can make all the difference. Research consistently shows that good managers are linked to happier teams and an increase of up to 70% in engagement. So when Boss's Day rolls around, it makes sense to take a moment to say thanks on Boss's day. The only problem? Actually organizing it.

Boss's Day should be easy – emphasis on should. Instead, everything ends up spiralling into a multi-step workplace project that involves opinion clashes, endless reminders and at least one severed relationship. There’s another way, we promise.

Let’s take a walk through everything you need to know to ace Boss’ Day, from start to finish.

Step 1: Arrange the Group Card First

Before anyone starts debating gifts, restaurants, mugs (don’t do it!) or whether your manager likes wine or chocolate more, start with the Boss’ Day card.

Why? Because well after the gift has been used, eaten, regifted or forgotten, the boss's day card is the last one standing. It’s the thing your boss will look back on – as much as they may love a good box of chocolates, they’ll remember the messages team members share about the impact they’ve had.

Getting the card organized early also gives everyone time to add their message, especially remote team members who usually discover workplace celebrations approximately two days after they've happened.

Not sure how to get started? We’ve got a guide for how to create an online group card. In just a couple of minutes, you’ll have your card ready to go, from choosing designs to scheduling delivery. You can even download it as a PDF to print and give in person!

Step 2: Budgeting + Culture: Decide What Kind of Boss's Day You're Having

So, you’ve scheduled your card – the most important part is over and yes, you can breathe a sigh of relief, but don’t hang your apron up yet. The key to doing Boss’ Day the right way is to know your team.

Not every workplace celebrates Boss's Day in the same way – some teams choose to just organize a card, some collect for a group gift and some do both.

The key is keeping expectations reasonable – this isn't a royal wedding, it's a workplace thank you. Now that’s not necessarily less significant, but it also means you don’t want to spend excessively or plan an elaborate work do.

With a GroupTogether card and gift collection, you can easily make contributions optional and allow your team to choose the amount they put in, or simply sign the card without contributing towards the gift. Some people will contribute money and some will write a thoughtful message and leave it at that – all of those are perfectly valid ways to participate and allowing this ensures everyone in your team gets involved, which is one of the most important elements of a successful Boss’ Day.

Step 3: Don't Turn Gift Selection Into a Committee Meeting

So you’ve raised the big question at your weekly meeting – before long, you're thirty ideas deep and no closer to a decision. Here’s the secret no one tells you…the simplest solution is just avoiding the guessing game altogether.

The hardest part is accepting that you don’t have to buy the most perfect gift that matches perfectly to their Myer-Briggs Type Indicator to get it right – you really just need to let them choose for themselves.

And that's why flexible eGift Cards like the ManyCard tend to work better than specific gifts. Instead of whipping out the scrying crystals to figure out their favorite restaurant, you can give them the freedom to decide for themselves what they’d get the most use out of.

The ManyCard offers:

• A selection of 150+ retailers from their fave lifestyle and tech brands to a range of outdoor experiences and self care eGift Cards.
• The ability to mix and match between brands – yep, they’re not locked in to one option.
• A beautiful digital unwrapping animation that combines convenience with tradition.
• A fully digital process, from fund collection to delivery – this means no more chasing up payments or last-minute shopping trips.
• Trackable delivery so you can know they’ve got their gift.
• Live chat support – you can talk with a real person if you have any questions.

Sometimes the easiest option really is the best.

Step 4: Remember What Boss's Day Is Actually About

It's easy to get caught up in the logistics of the card, the gift and the celebrations, but at its core, Boss's Day is about recognizing someone who's helped make work better.

Maybe they supported you through a difficult project, maybe they gave you an opportunity you weren't expecting, maybe they advocated for your promotion or made a stressful year a little easier. Whatever it may be, the most important thing you can do on Boss’ Day is to tell them that – yes, the card offers a tangible reminder and the gift shows your appreciation, but the message itself is the driving force behind why bosses do what they do.

Step 5: Streamline Communications: Avoiding the Slack Thread Spiral

Every Boss's Day organizer knows the signs – the original message starts out innocent enough. Maybe something like, "Should we organize something for Boss's Day?"

Then come the replies.

A few suggestions…then the passive aggressive counter-suggestions.

Questions.

More questions.

Did we mention the questions?

At some point, someone derails the discussion to plug their macrame plant-holder side gig.

And what happens? Nothing gets decided and everyone’s confused.

That’s where a streamlining platform like GroupTogether comes in handy – we take care of everything from card designs and inviting, to the money collection, gift and tracking. And yes, you can even drop the link to the card in your Slack channel!

It’s great to spit ball with your team, but sometimes having a no nonsense plan is the best way to prevent tangents and decision paralysis – and that doesn’t have to mean inhibiting creativity! With GroupTogether, your team can write unlimited messages and add fun GIFs and photos to the card to make it their own.

Your future self will thank you.

Step 6: Team Up: Let the Whole Group Participate

A bunch of messages is provably much more powerful than just one generic note from the team (usually written by the same person who organizes every card!), so why limit everyone when you don’t need to? With GroupTogether’s Boss’ Day cards, your team can write as many messages as they like, individualized with their choice of GIFs, photos and fun stories that’ll make your boss feel like they’re gathered ‘round the campfire. The best part? We’ll handle all the nudges so you can skip over awkward and straight on to success.

That’s what makes a group card hit the mark. Plus, if you'd like to include a gift it’s so easy to add an ManyCard collection and let the whole team contribute towards something your manager can actually choose for themselves.

Now it’s time to go forth and organize with confidence – and remember, if all else fails, skip the Best Boss mug. Just…trust us.
